Para (for / in order to)
Destino (destination)
La tarta es para la fiesta. (The cake is for the party.)
Las sillas son para la casa nueva. (The chairs are for the new house.)
Pedro compra un regalo para María. (Pedro buys a present for María.)
Dirección (direction)
Maria va para New Jersey cada día. (Maria goes to New Jersey every day.)
Nosotros vamos para el hospital cada mañana. (We go to the hospital every morning.)
In these examples we could use a instead of para with the same meaning: Maria va a New Jersey cada día. Nosotros vamos al hospital cada mañana. It's more common to use a, but people do use para sometimes.
Propósito (purpose) / objetivo (goal) (meaning in order to)
Trabajo para ganar dinero. (I work in order to earn money.)
Nosotros vamos a la escuela para aprender español. (We go to school in order to learn Spanish.)
Fui a New Jersey para visitar a mi amiga. (Lit. I went to New Jersey in order to visit my friend.)
Voy al gimnasio para estar fuerte. (I go to the gym in order to be/to stay strong.)
When using para as in order to, we usually use it with the infinitive form of a verb.
Deadline
Necesito el informe para el miércoles. (I need the report for/by Wednesday.)
Por (for / because of)
Período de tiempo (time period)
Trabajo por ocho horas cada día. (I work for eight hours every day.)
Estoy en Nueva York por tres días. (I am in New York for three days.)
For periods of time, por is frequently omitted: Trabajo ocho horas cada día. Estoy en Nueva York tres días.
Razón (reason) / causa (cause) (meaning because of)
Berges Institute está cerrado por Thanksgiving. (Berges Institute is closed “because of” Thanksgiving.)
El metro no funciona por un incidente. (The subway does not work because of an incident.)
El aeropuerto está cerrado por la tormenta. (The airport is closed because of the storm.)
When using por as because of, we usually use it with a noun.

Compré un par de zapatos por 100 euros. (I bought a pair of shoes for 100 euros.)
Cambié mi guitarra acústica por una eléctrica. (I exchanged my acoustic guitar for an electric one.)
