Frequently asked questions

I need to discuss sensitive topics with clients. Will conversational Spanish be enough?

Conversational fluency is the foundation for all specialized communication, including sensitive topics. Once you're conversational, you'll be able to discuss difficult subjects with empathy and understanding. Many social workers find that even basic conversational ability dramatically improves their client relationships.

Do you teach vocabulary for government services and benefits?

We teach general conversational Spanish. The specialized vocabulary for benefits, legal services, and government programs can be learned more easily once you have conversational fluency. Some students supplement our classes with field-specific glossaries.

How quickly can I start conducting client interviews in Spanish?

Many social workers can handle basic intake conversations within 10-15 months of regular study. You'll be able to ask questions, understand responses, and explain services - specialized terminology becomes easier to incorporate as you progress.

Will I learn to understand different Spanish dialects from my clients?

Yes. Our instructors come from various Spanish-speaking countries, exposing you to different accents and regional variations. This helps you understand clients from diverse backgrounds while learning clear, widely-understood Spanish yourself.

I’m currently taking the beginner level at Berges Institute, and I’m really enjoying it so far. The level is suitable for beginners and the lessons are easy to follow, while still challenging you to learn and practise new vocabulary and grammar. I

This level of Spanish is very good for beginners although I do feel more time is needed for the lesson. Sometimes it is hard to keep up with the lessons.

So far covered a lot of ground. It’s very thorough and teacher is good. Sometimes finding it tricky to recall vocabulary and find it in the lessons. It’s a good starting point

The level has been good. I knew bits of Spanish as I had been using online resources and Duolingo for many years. I was using the lessons to reinforce what I knew and also gain confidence speaking. I have ended up learning far more than I ever imagined. I've still not mastered the talking completely but the confidence is improving and I'm seeing this as adding further building blocks so that I can begin speaking more coherently in time. I have learnt so much over 9 weeks and with holidays and life getting in the way the Berges method has allowed me to rearrange lessons. I'm keen to step up to the next level to how much further I can improve my Spanish.

I've been learning with Rolando Gonzalez for 6 classes so far. And it's been really good, I'm confident in what I've learnt so far. Every class begins with discussing the homework for the previous class. And it's a highly interactive discussion with Rolando and all the students. It's been great so far, highly recommend.

Beginner level was perfect for me - live instruction, a set class time with other students participating, no technology issues to resolve when accessing the class or the course material, easy to reschedule if needed. I couldn’t be more pleased or more encouraged! Looking forward to the next level.

Great class. I learned so much in a short time, really clarified some of the basic grammar and common mistakes that had tripped me up in the past. Silas was a fantastic teacher!

Marco Pastrana is always making sure all of his students stay engaged and understand the lessons thoroughly before moving forward to the next lessons. I also liked Gaston who explained clearly and professionally to make everyone feel comfortable and to build on solid principles of learning spanish.

I like the teacher's learning style. Very hands on and pushes you out of your comfort zone. Not many people in each class so it gives you multiple opportunities to practice and think on the spot. Highly recommend!

I completed week 6 of the beginner's course yesterday and I am very much enjoying it. My husband and I have been visiting Spain for a month for the last two years and I wanted to try to learn Spanish so that I can speak to people in shops and restaurants, etc. The content of this course is perfect for me and the way we have been building on grammar is making the learning easier. The homework tasks are essential for consolidating the learning. Our tutor, Luana, is very knowledgeable and she keeps our lessons interesting and fun. I have already recommended the course to others.

I took the placement test and qualified for Level two but I opted to start with Level one. I felt I needed to reinforce some skills. This is an amazing class that has helped me to develop my Spanish. All the teachers are so good at teaching. I’ve had to reschedule many times during the week and it’s so easy to do that. I’m 6 weeks into it and look forward to the next 4 classes. Great classes!

The Beginners Spanish class covered so much material! It is more than worth its value. The instructor was very knowledgeable and professional. She went over the homework diligently (yes, there is homework!) and gave ample opportunities to ask questions during the class. I would highly recommend the class! I am already looking forward to taking the next class!

I’ve found this beginner’s Spanish course to be really helpful. The level is ideal for complete beginners. I’d been using Duolingo for about a year beforehand, and I’ve found this course to be a great complement to that learning. The topics covered are relevant to everyday situations, and the classes are taught at a pace that’s easy for everyone to follow. There’s also a relaxed, supportive atmosphere where you’re free to make mistakes and learn without feeling under pressure. I’d happily recommend this course to anyone looking to start learning Spanish.
