Frequently asked questions

I work with Spanish-speaking communities. Will this help me serve them better?

Absolutely. Conversational Spanish allows you to communicate directly with Spanish-speaking community members, understand their needs, explain programs and services, and build trusting relationships. Even basic Spanish demonstrates respect and commitment to serving the entire community.

Do you teach nonprofit-specific vocabulary?

We teach conversational Spanish. The specialized vocabulary for grants, programs, advocacy, and nonprofit work can be learned more easily once you have conversational fluency. Many nonprofit professionals supplement with sector-specific terminology.

How quickly can I communicate with community members in Spanish?

Most students can handle basic community interactions within 10-15 months of consistent study. You'll be able to have simple conversations, explain your organization's work, and understand basic concerns from community members. More complex discussions develop as you progress.

Will this help with both domestic and international work?

Yes! Our instructors come from various Spanish-speaking countries, so you'll learn Spanish that works across Latin America and Spain. This is valuable whether you're working with local immigrant communities in the U.S. or doing international development work abroad.

This level has been very helpful for me. I tried a foreign language app, but I find the interactive classes from Berges to be much more conducive to learning the language. I will definitely take more classes from Berges in the future!

Although this course is supposedly for complete beginners, the course content does not match the level. I have an extendí e language background, so I have not had any trouble, but there has been no information about basic language concepts like what a conjugation. I am taking it with an absolute language beginner, and I am filling in a lot of gaps.

From the very first class, I learned valuable rules regarding grammar that I never learned in my many attempts to learn Spanish and they have helped remarkably. The lessons are challenging without being overwhelming. I am amazed at how far I've come in this short amount of time. Great program!

For those beginners like me, I recommend that you should take this course until the end. For my experience, this helped me a lot starting from the basics of Spanish and how to use it. Teachers were very nice and approachable.

This is a very well organized and effective course. It is fast paced and requires a significant time investment for necessary memorization. The book and written exercises work well for retention and seeing what you don’t know. Our instructor, Rolando, was excellent. He kept our attention and explained things well. Highly recommend.

This beginner course was better than an introduction. I feel ready for my vacation with an overview of basic language. The instructor was so prepared and patient. Thank you for this opportunity at such a reasonable price.

The classes are amazing. As well as the instructors. I wish it was more than once a week. The lessons are very thorough and it helps work with a native Spanish speaking instructor.

GREAT intro course taught by a native Spanish speaker. Not only was there a textbook for the class, but slides presented the material slightly differently - making it a lot easier to understand and remember. PLUS it was easy to reschedule classes when life happens, making it so you don't miss any material.

I had done some self-study before joining the Berges beginners' course by listening to the free Language Transfer course by Mihalis Eleftheriou. This primer definitely gave me a head start with the Berges course, and maybe at the start it felt a little slow for me. Nonethetheless, it was very beneficial fo me to be able to interact with a native Spanish-speaking teacher as well as my classmates. It has already given me the confidence to engage in short basic conversations on my trips to Spain. Luana is an excellent teacher, but on the occasions where I had to use a different teacher I found them all helpful and positive and learnt different things from each. It was also enjoyable to meet virtually with a range of other Spanish students around the world.
