Basic Conversation is an immersion course, taught 100% in Spanish, that aims to practice all the basic simple and compound indicative tenses as students acquire vocabulary and gain confidence. Group activities, debates, articles, and relaxed conversation make this course an excellent way of improving your conversational skills.

Please note that, because we all learn at a different pace, 10 sessions at the Basic Conversation level may not be sufficient to reach an Intermediate Conversation level. Students should consider re-enrolling on the Basic Conversation level to further improve fluency and proficiency before considering a higher conversational level. If you need help deciding, please request an oral assessment with us (it’s free!) and we’ll give you our insight.

Please also note that our instructors tend not to review grammar rules in conversation classes, as the most important thing is to keep the conversation flowing! If you want to review specific grammar topics, it’s best to take one of our regular L1-5 classes and/or private lessons :)

To take this level, you should have scored at least 19 points on our Online Placement Test and/or completed Level 4. You should also be comfortable using most tenses correctly. For help deciding whether you are ready, schedule a free oral assessment.

How it works

1. Find a class that works for you and enroll. You can book more classes now or later.

2. Follow the instructions to join the video conference room on the day of your class.

Course Content

Los alumnos que lo deseen harán en esta clase una presentación corta en español. Comentaremos las presentaciones y hablaremos te temas de actualidad y otros temas aleatorios.

I enjoy the basic conversation course. I have taken it a few times. While the course is designed for basic conversation, students of different levels can benefit from it. The majority of the time only Spanish is spoken, but English is used by students and instructors if needed. The instructors normally use whiteboard and chat to spell out new words or remind us of the grammar rules. The class has a good pace when all can participate. The instructors can offer topics for the day or ask the students to drive the conversation. Overall, it is a well-structured course for the beginners.

I really enjoyed this course, especially since I took it in combination with a weekly grammar course (level 3). The classes reinforced one another well. I actually have even more notes from the conversation class, as there were constantly new words and phrases classmates or Gloria used that I want to commit to memory, or uses of grammar I overheard that needed some reflection. I liked the small classes and variety of themes. I'm more motivated now to keep learning Spanish-- and it was great to hear from multiple people recently that I have noticeably improved in the last few months!

I love this class. We talk about current things or personal things, but the subject matter is interesting and we are all involved. The time goes by quickly and it seems we still have more to say, so we look forward to the next class.

Basic conversation class seems to be whatever the teacher decides. I have a very good teacher who has increased my fluency. I enjoy the class and plan to continue.
