Basic Conversation is an immersion course, taught 100% in Spanish, that aims to practice all the basic simple and compound indicative tenses as students acquire vocabulary and gain confidence. Group activities, debates, articles, and relaxed conversation make this course an excellent way of improving your conversational skills.

Please note that, because we all learn at a different pace, 10 sessions at the Basic Conversation level may not be sufficient to reach an Intermediate Conversation level. Students should consider re-enrolling on the Basic Conversation level to further improve fluency and proficiency before considering a higher conversational level. If you need help deciding, please request an oral assessment with us (it’s free!) and we’ll give you our insight.

Please also note that our instructors tend not to review grammar rules in conversation classes, as the most important thing is to keep the conversation flowing! If you want to review specific grammar topics, it’s best to take one of our regular L1-5 classes and/or private lessons :)

To take this level, you should have scored at least 19 points on our Online Placement Test and/or completed Level 4. You should also be comfortable using most tenses correctly. For help deciding whether you are ready, schedule a free oral assessment.

How it works

2. Follow the instructions to join the video conference room on the day of your class.

Course Content

Conversations are not just interesting and fun but also important. Yesterday I found myself explaining to my partner something I had learned about myself by answering one of our class member’s questions for group discussion. I really like getting to know the other students and the instructor on a personal basis; that conversational intimacy is essential for the social interaction that informs and enhances language learning.

The course was very interesting and engaging. Silvana keeps the class moving and divides it into sections: sharing activities, talking about the articles read etc. It helps that she shares her screen. A very patient, knowledgeable teacher! I know all of your classes are online, alas, nothing beats face to face!

The preplanning was spot on. For the first class he he brought questions that could elicit answers on many levels. The homework outline has us choosing from various current topics in various fields of interest. I think the part about coming up with our own questions is a good idea because it forces me to switch to a different vocabulary--from being a listener that only responds to being the questioner. Our particular class had four people. I was very grateful for that. Although I think I might have a larger vocabulary than the others, I am very slow at getting it out of my mouth. With only four people, event those who were really struggling had sufficient time to develop their answers. Señor Alvarez was very gracious with time.
