These are verbs in which the subject and the object are the same person. In other words, the person does the action “to himself or herself.”
The infinitive of these verbs is like a standard Spanish verb, but with -se at the end:
Mirar – to watch/to look [at something or someone]
Mirarse – to look at yourself
In order to conjugate mirarse, we will “borrow” the conjugation from mirar, and add the reflexive pronouns:
Yo me (I, to myself)
Tú te (You, to yourself)
Él se (He, to himself)
Nosotros nos (We, to ourselves)
[Vosotros os (You, to yourselves)]
Ellos se (They, to themselves)
Here is mirar:
Mirar (to watch/to look)
Yo miro

Here are some common reflexive verbs:
Acostarse * – to go to bed/to lie down
Afeitarse – to shave (yourself)
Cepillarse los dientes – to brush your teeth
Depilarse – to remove hair from your own body
Dormirse * – to fall asleep
Ducharse/bañarse – to take a shower
Lavarse la cara – to wash your face
Levantarse – to get up/to wake up
Llamarse – to “be named”
Maquillarse – to put on makeup
Mirarse en el espejo – to look at yourself in the mirror
Peinarse – to comb your hair
Ponerse el sombrero * – to put on your hat
Quitarse el sombrero – to take your hat off
Vestirse * – to get dressed

Many verbs in Spanish have a reflexive and a non-reflexive version. And, many times, they have different meanings. For example, levantar means to lift, while levantarse means to wake up or to get up; dormirse means to fall asleep, while dormir means to sleep. In some cases, the meaning is very close: peinar means to comb someone’s hair, while peinarse means to comb your own hair. We need to treat all reflexive verbs as independent ones with their own specific meaning.
Yo levanto mucho peso. (I lift a lot of weight.)
Yo me levanto a las 10. (I get up at 10 [lit. I lift myself up].)
Yo me duermo a las 11. (I fall asleep at 11 [lit. I sleep myself].)
Yo duermo mucho los domingos. (I sleep a lot on Sundays.)
Yo peino a mi amiga. (I comb my friend’s hair.)
Yo me peino cada mañana. (I comb my hair every morning [lit. I comb myself].)
Note: To make a sentence negative, we just place the word no right before the reflexive pronoun:
Yo no me ducho por la mañana.
Acostarse and dormirse are “stem-changing” verbs:
Acostarse (to go to bed)

S: Sí, me lavo la cara cada mañana y cada noche.
P: ¿A qué hora tomas el metro (the subway)?
S: Tomo el metro a las nueve de la mañana. Tomo el tren G.
P: ¿Te maquillas cada día?
S: No, me maquillo los sábados cuando voy al club.
P: ¿A qué hora te acuestas cada día?
S: Me acuesto a las doce de la noche, ¿tú?
P: Yo me acuesto a las once y media.
Laura y yo nos levantamos a las siete de la mañana cada día. Nos lavamos la cara, nos cepillamos los dientes y desayunamos. A las ocho de la mañana nos duchamos, y Laura se depila en la ducha (the shower). Entonces, yo me afeito, y Laura se maquilla y se peina. Yo nunca me peino. A las nueve nos vestimos. Yo me pongo mi sombrero. Laura siempre se mira en el espejo. Vamos al trabajo de diez de la mañana a seis de la tarde. A las seis y cuarto vamos a casa. Entonces, vamos al gimnasio, miramos la televisión y cenamos. Normalmente nos acostamos a las diez de la noche.
